This post is written for Write Tribe Wednesday Prompt.
Dear Niece,
You cannot imagine how much your decision to explore creative writing as a full time occupation has delighted me. I can assure you that, if you make sincere efforts, then this could be the most satisfying line of work for you. Writing is an art and the mind, behind it, is an artist. The mind moulds and shapes the thoughts and notions into beautiful words.
But make no mistake; it is not as easy as some people imagine it to be. You will have to give time and effort to make it a success. The heart is like a wild creature; don't tame it by force, but motivate it to follow your heart's desire.
Make it a regular habit to write daily. You could start a blog. Initially focus on quantity of writing, do not think about the quality of work. Blogging will give you networking opportunities with other writers; their feedback should help you in improving your writing.
Set a limit of writing at least 100 words a day. You can write on whatever ideas come to you. Once you have put all your thoughts on paper or typed, then you can edit it for grammar, spelling and logic. Remember proofread later. If while writing, you get stuck on a thought for want of a more suitable word, mark the word or highlight and continue with your work. Later, while polishing your work, you can replace it.
Write about different topics and explore, before deciding a niche for yourself.
Go to other blogs and comment on their posts. Read books, not just for the plot; but to analyse the author’s style and logic.
Focus on your writing skills. Understand the importance of punctuation. You could sign up for a workshop or a crash course in creative writing, if possible. Enrich your vocabulary. A writer’s vocabulary makes his writing interesting and distinct.
Once you have gained confidence in your writing, explore writing opportunities with local media – articles / stories for magazines. Prepare a 100 words bio, as this is like a resume when you apply for a job.
Or you could perhaps write short stories, whatever, interests you. Or right a non fiction on your chosen topic. There are many options available, whatever suits your taste.
But remember, for now the key is to focus on daily writing and be open to criticism and suggestions. Here are a few words written just for you.
Pick up that pen, or if you wish type
Probe your mind
Find the hidden ideas to write
Write in the morning or perhaps at night
Whenever you feel like
You must just write
Every week, write as many times you like
Whatever suits you is fine
You’ll have to write and write
Wishing you all the success on your chosen path,
Your loving aunt,
Huma Masood
