One fateful day, I woke up with an uneasy feeling. The first thought that came to my mind was whether something was different about that day.
Within minutes this uneasiness changed to mild anxiety. I was sweating and felt overwhelmed. I had probably caught a bug. But I couldn’t let this delay me. My work was very demanding. My time was an expensive commodity that I couldn’t spare.
Time…then I realized that the Time equipment had not run the usual loop to wake me. The cause was clear when I turned to check the time. The equipment was dead. Strange…

I was now fully awake and alert. I grasped I was not ill, but my usually cool and well ventilated suite was hot and stuffy. The atmosphere of the centrally maintained suite had risen significantly to make it uncomfortable. It brought to my mind memories of my visit to The Museum Town in the Old World continent.
The Old World continent was the wild land area which was not used for residence and commercial purposes generally. It was known mostly for The Museum Town, few natural sanctuaries for plants and animals, and acres of barren disused land used for government experiments.
The Museum Town was a sanctuary, preserved as was decades ago, in the Computer Era, a place to learn and understand the lifestyle and problems faced by our ancestors. Despite it being stuffy I found the place very well organized and labeled. Each item had audios to describe the usage and its limitations, due to which usage was discontinued.
Museum Town was managed by its owner. Everyone knew him as the Museum-man. Museum-man was an ethnic man in his sixties. He was well versed in the skills of Computer Age living. He gave the visitors a tour of the whole place himself, explaining the nitty-gritty of the Computer Age. His sincere efforts were sometimes reciprocated with jests and teasing. But that neither dampened his spirits nor his manner. He calmly went on with his duties tour after tour, not missing an item or failing an explanation.
There was a small room, marked as bathroom, this was the place allotted to finish daily hygiene routine. This was not even comparable to the Hygiene suites of the day. Adjacent to the water source area, there was the commode and a tub area for daily cleaning and hygiene routines. The Museum-man told us that the Computer Age human did most tasks manually, except the ones that required hard work and effort.
However, you got to see some interesting tools kept in the cabinet. There was a small tool called toothbrush, with a small brush on one end to clean the teeth with and spool of thread, I never quite understood its purpose. Museum-man explained the process of cleaning the teeth, which was a tedious task. What a waste of time and energy. The Hygiene equipment was much more efficient. With one press, the medicated steam cleaned and killed the germs of the mouth, nose and face. Shave was a quick process too. Steam-cleaning was a marvelous process, one bathe only when one had the luxury of time.
There was more in the cabinet - a tube labeled face-wash, bottles of various sizes and colors neatly labeled.
Life was hard in the Computer Age. The Museum-man had just smiled when I joked with my friends how our world would seem like a paradise to ancient human.
Recalling the little details of that visit, elevated my mood and I got up. Towards the Hygiene Suite, I realized it was strangely quiet. No low humming of the central system not even the far away buzz. It was odd as if life had come to a standstill. But how was that possible….
To my astonishment, I found the Hygiene Equipment was dead too.
What was this interference in my perfect life?
I had to walk down to the security to get a full assessment of the situation.
Power had taken a hit of sorts early morning, the reason for which was not yet known. City engineers were trying to find the cause and solution to this crisis. All that depended on power was dead and this included the total life sustaining essential systems of our paradise. Life, as we knew it, simply had come to standstill.
A month has passed since….
Power is still down. The engineers were not able to solve the problem then.
Since our whole civilization was depended on power resources for basic tasks, we are relearning to do these tasks manually. It is neither difficult nor easy. But it is definitely inefficient. Few groups of artists have come together to make basic tools from trees, thank goodness, we still have a lot of trees. We need to learn the use of manufacture of needed tools from The Museum Town.
Speaking of the Town Museum, it has been placed under high security, quoting the enormous increase in value of the items therein. Few, who were able to convince the Museum-man, were allowed to visit, and anyway the ticket price was so hiked that few could afford the visit.
Museum-man, who is now considered the most knowledgeable human with respect to the Computer Age, has started crash course workshops to train teachers, so that these teachers can further spread the knowledge. After training these teachers, he had to blueprint with the engineers the basic tool manufacturing facilities.
We had to relearn to live life. And Museum-man was going to teach us to do that. He is the most powerful human on the planet and his time is most precious. Even the president seeks his assistance in all aspects, so his power is growing enormously by the hour.
I have also applied for his workshops and am currently awaiting acceptance.
